Riva Del Garda Hotels

People come to Lake Garda on the northern reaches of Italy, to indulge in a wide range of lake activities and other outdoor adventures associated with the southern slopes of the Italian Alps. It is a stunning setting for such purposes but just as amenable for taking some time out to relax, enjoy the views and to immerse oneself in the great history and rich cultural traditions of the largest town on the lake, Riva del Garda. Occupying a beautiful position on the north western shore of the lake, at the foot of Monte Rochetta, the town has much to recommend it as a tourist destination, and not least in the quality, style, and range of Riva del Garda hotels.

The town has, at various points, been under the control of many different peoples, from the Romans and Goths, to Visconti and Venetians, and it is the last of these which are responsible for the the early 16th century Bastion, which overlooks the town and entire lake. It is by no means however the only architectural marvel in the town and certainly not the oldest. The Piazza Tre Novembre is a highlight of any historic tour and has many surrounding buildings constructed in the Lombard-Veneto style, among them the 14th century Palazzo Pretorio and the Town Hall. Nearby is the Piazza S. Rocco, where the ruins of the old town walls and Church of Sts Rocco and Vigilio can be found. Further architectural treasures include the Apponale bell and clock tower, built in 1200, and many other historic squares and palaces, all of which will be within easy reach of most Riva del Garda hotels.

The town is certainly ideal for those who do not like to exert too much energy seeking out some history, especially if surrounded by it during a stay in one of the historic Riva del Garda hotels. Some of these are found right in the heart of town, indistinguishable from the many other historic buildings in the locale and while they may not be the largest, or indeed the best equipped with a full range of leisure facilities, they will certainly be filled with character and provide an intimate and stylish backdrop to a romantic break. These places will generally follow a boutique hotel philosophy, whereby superb environments are enhanced further by an exquisite level of personal service and in-room amenity.

It is possible to fill any amount of leisure time soaking up the rich culture and history of the town but for many visitors to Riva del Garda it is the outdoor sports and activities which dominate the proceedings. The Fraglia Vela Riva is the main centre for lake bound activities, the most popular being sailing and windsurfing and for those who like to try their hand at these and other disciplines there are schools, with all equipment provided, on the beaches. There are local indoor and outdoor swimming pools which offer a more gentle, and less cold, approach to enjoying the water. Some Riva del Garda hotels are directly associated with lake and outdoor activities and will generally offer activity packages for guests to make the most of any time they have available.

While the lake provides the main focus for most activities, head in the other direction for some climbing and hiking on Monte Rochetta, mountain biking on Monte Brione, or cycling on the fabulous route linking the town with Torbole sul Garda. Horse riding, fishing and diving are also available locally, as is beach volleyball, tennis, basketball and football, all of which are part of the extensive beach life and activities on offer. Riva del Garda hotels provide a base for all year round activities and in winter this means skiing on the slopes of Monte Baldo. The cable car is found just 17km from the town, and for sterner challenges a shuttle bus connects the town with the slopes of Polsa S. Valentino. For the true skiing hard-liners, the 'Tre Tre' run of Madonna di Campligio is 115km away.

Even with so much to do some people will prefer to do nothing else than relax and take in the views and clean mountain air. For these people the luxury Riva del Garda hotels are just perfect. They will certainly have quiet spaces in which to find a little piece of paradise and for some indulgent time, spas and other sumptuous leisure facilities. Dining will be very much of the 'fine' variety and rooms and suites will be escapes from the world into a personal journey of style, comfort and first class amenity. There are grand resort style hotels and mountain side villa retreats and either way they will provide everything required for rest, relaxation and recreation.

The beautiful natural landscape is the ideal environment for a different type of hotel, those described as Agriturismo. Adapted from former working farms they will have a stunning outlook and provide a base from which to explore the natural wonders of the surrounding area. They are filled with rustic character too, balanced perfectly with all the contemporary aspects of leisure and hospitality. It is possible to enjoy the town, lake and all the attractions without breaking the bank, by staying in one of the more affordable Riva del Garda hotels. They may have less in the way of superior comforts and amenities but for those who will spend their time on the lake or the slopes they are more than sufficient.
